What the Online Keyboard Test Checks

Keyboard Keys, Codes and Rollover Explained

Browsers report both the character produced by a key and its physical code. Keyboard layout, operating-system shortcuts and browser behaviour can therefore affect what appears in the test.

Key value

The Last key result shows the character or action reported by the browser, such as A, Enter, Shift or Space.

Physical key code

The Key code result identifies the approximate physical position, such as KeyA, Digit1, ShiftLeft or ArrowUp.

Unique keys tested

This count records how many different key codes have been detected since the test was opened or reset.

Keys held now

This live number shows how many keys the browser currently believes are pressed at the same time.

Maximum rollover

The highest simultaneous-key count reached during the test. It is a practical browser reading, not a complete laboratory rollover certification.

When to Use an Online Keyboard Tester

A browser keyboard test is a useful first step before cleaning a keyboard, changing settings, reinstalling drivers, returning a device or arranging a repair.

When a key stops responding

Press the suspected key repeatedly and compare it with nearby keys to see whether the browser receives any input.

After cleaning or replacing keycaps

Check that each key presses, releases and returns normally after maintenance or reassembly.

Keyboard Layout and Browser Limitations

The on-screen layout is a common desktop keyboard arrangement. Physical keyboards can differ by country, language, laptop model, compact layout, numeric keypad and specialist function keys.

Some media keys, brightness controls, Fn combinations and operating-system shortcuts are handled before the browser receives them, so an absent result does not always mean the key is broken.

What This Keyboard Test Cannot Diagnose

The page can confirm browser key events but cannot inspect switches, membranes, wiring, batteries, wireless signal quality, firmware, liquid damage or internal electrical faults.

Intermittent keys may also pass during a short check. Repeat the test and compare another USB port, wireless connection, browser or computer when a result is inconsistent.

Try another browser or device

Compare a current browser, another port or another computer to separate a key fault from a software or connection issue.

What the Keyboard Test Results Mean

A working key should highlight when pressed and return to its normal appearance when released. A key that never highlights may be unresponsive, while a key that remains active may be physically stuck or repeatedly triggering.

Browser-based testing provides a functional check. It cannot inspect the keyboard's internal switches, wiring or physical condition.

Why does a key remain highlighted?

The browser may not have received the keyup event, the page may have lost focus or the key may be physically stuck. Release it, refocus the panel and reset the test.

Why are media or brightness keys missing?

Volume, brightness, playback, Fn and manufacturer keys are often handled by the operating system or keyboard firmware before a webpage can receive them.

Does the keyboard tester work on mobile devices?

The visual test is intended mainly for physical desktop, laptop, USB and Bluetooth keyboards. On-screen mobile keyboards may not expose normal hardware key codes.
