Camera Frame Rate Test

Webcam FPS Test – Check Camera Frame Rate Online

Measure your webcam's browser-observed frame rate online. Check live FPS, negotiated camera FPS, resolution, frame-time consistency and sustained performance without installing software.

Measure Webcam FPS

The test starts only after you grant camera permission. It counts frames delivered to the browser, reads the active camera settings and compares measured frame delivery with the browser-reported camera frame rate.

Measured FPS
Frames actually observed by the page over time.
Track FPS
The active frameRate setting exposed by the browser camera track.
Resolution
The live camera width and height.
Average frame time
Average interval between observed video frames.
Min and max FPS
Recent observed frame-rate range.
Irregular frames
Unusually long frame intervals that can indicate inconsistent delivery.
Sustained test
A 15-second run for a more stable performance result.

How to Test Webcam FPS

  1. Click Start Camera and allow browser permission.
  2. Select the webcam you want to test if multiple cameras are available.
  3. Wait a few seconds for exposure and frame rate to stabilise.
  4. Compare Measured FPS with Track FPS.
  5. Check active resolution and average frame time.
  6. Run the 15-second sustained FPS test.
  7. If FPS is low, improve lighting, reduce system load and try another USB port or camera mode.

Measured FPS vs Reported Webcam FPS

The browser may expose a negotiated frameRate value through the active camera track. This is useful, but it is not the same as counting frames actually delivered to the page. Showing both helps identify cases where a camera reports 30 or 60 FPS but delivers less consistently in practice.

What the Webcam FPS Test Checks

Measured FPS

Counts frames actually observed by the page over time.

Track-Reported FPS

Shows the active frameRate setting exposed by the browser.

Active Resolution

Shows the live width and height of the camera stream.

Frame Time

Measures intervals between delivered video frames.

Frame Stability

Highlights unusually long frame intervals that can look like stutter.

Camera Selection

Lets you switch between available video-input devices.

Webcam FPS Results Explained

ResultWhat it usually meansWhat to check

Large FPS swings or irregular framesInconsistent frame deliveryClose heavy apps, remove hubs and test another USB port or browser.
High resolution but lower FPSCamera may trade frame rate for resolutionTry a lower resolution in software that allows mode selection.

Why Lighting Can Change Webcam FPS

Many webcams use automatic exposure. In dim conditions, the camera may increase exposure time to make the picture brighter, which can reduce effective frame rate or create blur.

Webcam Resolution vs Frame Rate

Higher resolutions require more sensor, processing and connection bandwidth. Some webcams support 60 FPS only at lower resolutions while limiting higher-resolution modes to 30 FPS.

Browser-Observed Webcam FPS

This page measures frames delivered to the browser under the current camera mode and conditions. It does not certify the webcam's maximum hardware capability. Drivers, browser constraints, exposure, connection bandwidth and resolution can all affect the result.

Webcam FPS Troubleshooting

  1. Improve lighting. Better light can prevent auto exposure from lowering effective FPS.
  2. Check resolution. Some webcams support their highest FPS only at lower resolutions.
  3. Try another USB port. Avoid overloaded hubs or adapters when testing high-resolution, high-FPS webcams.
  4. Reduce system load. Close heavy apps, games and browser tabs.

Webcam FPS Test Frequently Asked Questions

What is a webcam FPS test?

A webcam FPS test measures how many video frames per second are actually reaching the browser from your camera during a live preview.

How does this webcam FPS test work?

After you start the camera, the tool counts delivered video frames over time, reads browser-exposed camera settings and calculates average, minimum and maximum observed FPS during the test.

Is measured FPS the same as the camera's advertised FPS?

Not always. A webcam may be advertised as 30 FPS or 60 FPS, but the actual frame rate can vary with resolution, lighting, USB bandwidth, browser constraints, drivers and system load.

What is track-reported FPS?

Track-reported FPS is the frameRate value exposed by the browser through the active camera track's settings. It describes the negotiated capture setting, while measured FPS reflects frames actually observed by the page.

Why is my 60 FPS webcam only showing 30 FPS?

Possible causes include the selected resolution, low light, USB bandwidth, camera mode, browser constraints, drivers or the webcam only supporting 60 FPS at certain resolutions.

Can low light reduce webcam FPS?

Yes. Some webcams lengthen exposure time in dim lighting, which can reduce the effective frame rate even when the camera supports a higher maximum FPS.

Does resolution affect webcam FPS?

Yes. Many webcams support higher frame rates only at lower resolutions. For example, a camera may support 60 FPS at 720p but only 30 FPS at 1080p.

Can USB ports affect webcam frame rate?

Yes. USB bandwidth, hubs, adapters and other devices sharing the same controller can affect high-resolution or high-frame-rate webcam modes.

What is a good webcam FPS?

Around 30 FPS is common for video calls and general use. 60 FPS can look smoother for movement, streaming or recording when the webcam, connection and software support it.

Why does measured FPS fluctuate?

Small changes are normal. Larger fluctuations can come from auto exposure, CPU load, browser scheduling, USB bandwidth, camera processing or changing lighting.

What does frame-time consistency mean?

It describes how evenly frames arrive. Stable intervals usually look smoother, while highly irregular intervals can indicate stutter or inconsistent delivery.

Can this test detect dropped webcam frames?

It can identify irregular delivery and compare expected versus observed frame timing. Browser-exposed dropped-frame counters may also be shown when available, but support varies.

Does this test record or upload my webcam video?

No. The live preview is handled locally in your browser. This tool does not need to upload your camera feed to run the FPS measurement.

Why do I have to allow camera permission?

Browsers require your permission before a webpage can access the webcam. The camera starts only after you choose to begin the test.

Can I choose a different camera?

Yes, when the browser exposes multiple video-input devices. Device names are usually available after camera permission has been granted.

Why is my camera selector missing names?

Browsers often hide camera labels until permission has been granted. Start the camera first, then the tool can refresh available video-input devices.

Does the browser affect webcam FPS?

Yes. Browsers differ in camera constraints, video-frame callbacks, power management and scheduling, so measured results can vary slightly between browsers.

Can this page certify my webcam's official frame rate?

No. It measures browser-observed delivery under the current conditions. It is useful for diagnostics, but it is not a manufacturer certification or laboratory benchmark.
